Part X

Plans and billing

The one-time purchase model, how the usage allowances work, and what happens at checkout.

How pricing works

Heirwise premium is a one-time purchase, not a recurring subscription. You pay once for the estate you're administering rather than being billed every month while probate grinds on — which matters, because probate routinely takes a year or more and a monthly charge would punish you for a timeline you don't control.

There are two tiers. The free tier is aimed at getting your information into Heirwise — creating the estate, uploading documents, and seeing the picture come together. Upgrading raises the limits and opens up the later phases in the app.

Plan names, the current price, exactly what each tier includes, and how long access lasts are all listed on the pricing page. This guide deliberately doesn't restate them, because the pricing page is the live source and a copy here would eventually be wrong.

You upgrade from your dashboard. There's no separate sales process and nothing to schedule.

Usage allowances

Both tiers have allowances, and they work differently from each other in a way worth understanding.

AllowanceHow it behaves
Document uploadsOn the free tier this is a running total that does not reset — a lifetime allowance for the account, not a monthly one. Deleting a document does not give the slot back.
Elin messagesA monthly allowance that resets with the calendar month, and is higher on the paid tier.

Your usage and the applicable limit are shown in the app. Note that the notice appears when you reach a limit rather than as you approach it, so there's no advance warning — check the counter if you're working through a large batch. Those live figures are the authority; the limits can change, which is why no numbers appear here.

Upload whole documents rather than page-by-page photographs, and avoid duplicates. Six images of one bank statement cost six uploads, extract worse than a single multi-page scan, and on the free tier you don't get the slots back.

Checkout, receipts, and refunds

Payment is handled by Stripe. Checkout happens inside Heirwise rather than sending you off to another site, but the card details go directly to Stripe — Heirwise never sees or stores your card number.

After paying, your account is upgraded automatically. There's a brief moment while the payment confirms, and Heirwise will show that it's finalizing rather than leaving you wondering. If confirmation takes unusually long you'll be told, instead of the page hanging silently.

Clicking the pay button twice won't charge you twice. Repeated attempts on the same checkout are recognized and reuse the same session.

Refunds

If a payment is fully refunded, the account returns to the free tier. A partial refund leaves premium access in place. Disputed charges also return the account to free while the dispute is resolved.

Receipts come from Stripe to the email on your account. Keep them — if you're claiming administration expenses against the estate, the cost of tooling used to administer it may well belong on that list, which is a question for your accountant.

Billing attaches to your account rather than to an estate. Heirwise currently holds one estate per account, so in practice the two amount to the same thing.

Heirwise is a self-help tool, not a law firm, and does not provide legal or tax advice. For decisions requiring legal judgment, consult a licensed Pennsylvania attorney. This guide describes how to use Heirwise; where it mentions Pennsylvania procedure it is general information, not advice about your estate.
